About halal job

Assalamu Alaikum.

Hazrat, I am an expatriate. Those of us who are expatriates here have a question about our workplace. That is, we can work here at Dunkin 'Donuts, McDonald's, Wal-Mart, or some such grocery. All these shops sell haram things just like our daily necessities. In addition to clothes and vegetables, pigs are also sold. For instance, Dunkin Donut is a common fast food restaurant. In Dunkin Donuts, the food choices also consist of pork sandwiches. There is a fast-food restaurant called Popeyes where chicken is sold but the chicken is not zabiha halal. The other two items have a mix of pork. Now some people say it is haram to work here, some people say it is permissible to work in these places. Now the question is will it be halal for us to work at these places that sell haram things such as, Popeyes, Dunkin Donuts, McDonald's, Walmart? Please give us a solution. Where do we work?

A store or a restaurant where only “haram” or for the most part “haram” items, such as liquors, non-slaughtered meat, pork etc., are sold to customers, it is not allowed to work in those places.

Since dealing in prohibitive products is illegal under Shariah law, likewise it is forbidden to participate and collaborate in unlawful matters.

Allah (SWT) says:

“But help ye not one another in sin and rancor”.

Accordingly, the Holy Prophet Hazrat Mohammad (SAW) has cursed the usurer, the client, writer of interest deal and its witness in on interest deal en bloc.

As narrated by Hazrat Abdullah ibn Omar (RA), The Holy Prophet (SAW) said Allah has cursed wine, its drinker, its server, its seller, its buyer, its presser, the one for whom it is pressed, the one who conveys it, and the one to whom it is conveyed.

The second scenario is when the shopping center or a restaurant stocks “halal” items far in excess than “haram” products like grocery stores, shopping malls, super markets etc., it is allowed to work in those places. It is however important to avoid processing or selling of “haram” products as much as practically possible.

But if possible, seek employer’s permission allowing an exception for you in selling prohibited products. But if such a permission is not granted, and in the line of duty you are obliged to sell “haram” products, we would recommend you to accurately estimate the time spent on processing and selling “haram” products, and give this ill earned money into charity.

However, it would be much safer to avoid working where both “halal” and “haram” goods are dealt with.

Rather seek job at a store which deals entirely in “halal” products.
