Question ID: 1194 Category: Five Pillars of Islam
Salawat on the Prophet in Salah

I was wondering when in in sitting position of any salah saying (Ataheyato lila he wasalwatu watayibatu) part and we say "Peace be upon you, oh prophet of Allah and the mercy of Allah and his blessings" Are we speaking to the prophet when we say that?

الجواب وباللہ التوفیق

In "Tashahhud", there is no direct address to the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), but as a copy and anecdote; meaning that, when Allah’s Messenger (SAW) taught the words of "Tashahhud", the same words are then recited as an anecdote, and then the “Salam” is conveyed to Allah’s Messenger (SAW) by the angels.

Therefore, in Tahtawi Ala Maraqi Al-Falah, it is said that the form of “Nidaa and Khatab” (call and address) in the "Tashahhud" is recited as a copy, and not because the Blessed Soul of the Holy Prophet (SAW) is present during reading, and is also in the company of or besides everyone who recites "Tashahud", as in the case of یا جبال اَوّبِی and in recitation of many other “Aayat-e-Quraan”, the main purpose is to copy. Therefore, it is incorrect to to assume and argue through this that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) is (Present and Observer)
