Question ID: 1514 Category: Marriage and Divorce
parents won’t let me get married

I am 21 year old girl, and I want to get married to a muslim man. My parents do not approve of him because he is a revert, he is not from the same country as us, and his family is not muslim. I believe that those reasons are not islamically valid, and I want to know my options. My community here does not have a local imam I can bring in to this situation. How can I have a nikkah if my dad is not being reasonable?

الجواب وباللہ التوفیق

If a Muslim sincerely repents and converts to Islam and expresses disregard for the previous religion, then it is permissible according to shari'ah to marry him. Marriage is valid even if parents do not agree. But parents’ decisions are based on expediency, compassion, and goodness for their children. Therefore, taking the advice of parents and taking care of their motives only leads to betterment for the children. Also, if there is no religious maturity, then in the future there will be problems with the training and upbringing of the children and their religious tendency and then there will be problems with the family. It is better that you do “Istikharah” in this regard.
