“Istikharah” can also be done during menstruation, but much better done in purity. The best way to do this is to offer two rak'ats of prayers with the intention of supererogatory. It is recommended to recite Surah Al-Kafiroon after Surah Al-Fatihah in the first rak'ah and Surah Ikhlas after Surah Al-Fatihah in the second rak'ah. After salutation, humbly praise Allah and repent of your sins and recite Durood Sharif.

Then recite the following duaa:

اللھم انی استخیرک بعلمک و استقدرک بقدرتک و اسئلک من فضلک العظیم، فانک تقدر و لا اقدر و تعلم و لا اعلم  وانت علام الغیوب۔ اللھم ان کنت تعلم ان ھذا الامرخیر لی فی دینی و معاشی و عاقبۃ امری و عاجلہ و آجلہ فاقدرہ لی و یسرہ لی ثم بارک لی فیہ۔ و ان کنت تعلم ان ھذا الامر شر لی فی دینی و معاشی و عاقبۃ امری و عاجلہ و آجلہ فاصرفہ عنی و اصرفنی عنہ واقدر لی الخیر حیث کان ثم ارضنی بہٖ

If you do not remember this prayer orally, you can read it through. At the underlined words, make intention of the work for which “Istikhara” is being done. In the already state of ablution, lie down on a clean bed facing towards the “qiblah” direction and go to sleep.

If you do not understand anything even after doing “Istikharah” once or twice, tcontinue doing this for seven consecutive days. If you have a dream, don't tell it to each and everyone. Try to find out its interpretation from a religious dream interpreter. 

And if the dream does not show up, then In Shaa Allah whatever is better will become firm in your heart, or the intention to do the same will be firm in your heart, and action can be taken accordingly. God willing, it will result with good outcome. The best time for Istikharah is after Isha before going to bed. However, it can be done at other times as well. (Shami: 461, Tahtawi: 238).

It should be noted that in case of excuse of prayers, one can perform” Istikharah” even without prayers.

’’ الاستخارۃ طلب الخیر من اللہ تعالیٰ فیمایقصدمن الامور ’’  ’’ عن جابربن عبداللہ قال کان رسول اللہ صل اللہ علیہ وسلم یعلمنا السورۃ من القرآن یقول لنااذاہم احدکم بالامر فلیرکع رکعتین من غیرالفریضۃ ولیقل اللہم انی استخیرک بعلمک واستقدرک بقدرتک واسئلک من فضلک الکریم فانک تقدرولااقدروتعلم ولااعلم وانت علام الغیوب اللہم فان کنت تعلم ان ہذالامر یسمیہ یعنیہ الذی یرید خیرافی دینی ومعاشی ومعادی ومعاقبہ امرفاقدرہ لی ویسرہ لی وبارک لی فیہ اللہم ان کنت تعلم شرالی مثل الاول فاصرفنی عنہ واصرفہ عنی واقدرلی الخیر حیث کان ثم ارضنی اوقال عاجل امرا ’’  ’’ وقال صاحب البذل المراد بالامر مایعتنی بشانہ ویندر ووجودہ قبل السفر والعمارۃ ونحوہما لاکالاکل والشرب المعتاد ولیقرء فی الاولیٰ الکافرون وفی الثانی الاخلاص ویکررالصلوۃ حتی یظہر الی سبع مرات ’’ … ( بذل المجہود ۲۰۰/۳ )

’’ ومنہارکعتاالاستخارۃ عن جابربن عبداللہ قال …وینبغی ان یکررہاسبعا لماروی ابن السنی یاانس اذاہممت بامر فاستخرربک فیہ سبع مرات ثم انظر الی الذی سبق الی قلبک فان الخیر فیہ ولوتعذرت علیہ الصلوۃالاستخار بالدعاء ملخصاوفی شرح الشرعۃ المسموع ومن المشائخ انہ ینبغی ان ینام علی طہارۃ مسقتبل القبلۃ بعد قراء ۃ المذکورۃ فان رأی فی منامہ بیاضا اوخضرۃ فذلک الامر خیر وان رأ ی فیہ السوداء اوحمرۃ فہوشرینبغی ان یجتنب ’’ … ( فتاویٰ شامی : ۵۰۷/۱ )
