Position of Beard in Islam and Ruling about its trimming

Assalamualaikum,

Please assist me in my situation.  My educational institute has dress code for students.  And all students enrolled are required to follow the dress code. Part of their dress code is to keep a trimmed beard. I had a discussion with them on this matter and told them that it is required in our religion Islam.   In response to that they requested me to submit a written note from our scholars on beard trimming.

Therefore, please provide me with an article that explains the following:

  • The ruling of beard in Islam.
  • Can a Muslim trim his beard?

Thank you so much for your cooperation.

الجواب وباللہ التوفیق

The beard is a recognized factor of Islam, and keeping a beard is mandatory and to shave it, is forbidden.  Whoever shaves or trims his beard will be considered an open sinner. The Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him) stated, grow your beard and trim your mustache. In the situation stated above, to shave or trim the beard will not be permissible.
