Divorce words uttered during extreme anger episodes — guidance needed

A person experiences extreme anger episodes during which the heart races, trembling and sweating occur, and self-control is nearly lost. In such episodes, his behavior sometimes reaches an “ighlāq-like” or out-of-control state. The condition is medically documented with reports and treatment/therapy is ongoing.

During one such episode, he uttered divorce words unintentionally, immediately regretted it, and had no intention to break his family. This is not ordinary anger; awareness and control are significantly impaired.

Please advise, based on Qur’an and Sunnah, whether such words are Islamically valid. Kindly assess on a case-by-case basis.

  1. In the present case, if the husband is truly ill and doctors confirm his condition, and he gave divorce while in a state where he had no control over his actions, and he was not in his senses or aware of his behavior, then a divorce issued in such a condition does not take effect in Shariah.
  2. However, if at the time of divorce the husband was in his senses and not in a state of illness, and was only in a condition of anger, then the divorce will take effect.

It is better to describe the full details of the incident at the time of divorce and seek a proper ruling based on that.
