Fatwa Request on Obligations During Disability and Illness

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.

I am seeking guidance regarding some hardships I’m facing due to chronic illness. I have been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and also had spinal surgery. Because of severe symptoms — including weakness, extreme fatigue, bladder incontinence, constipation, and difficulty performing wudu — I have missed some prayers and some days of fasting. There are times when I cannot make wudu, cannot stand, or cannot control my bladder/bowels, and sometimes I am physically unable to pray on time. Fasting is also very difficult for me because my symptoms worsen significantly. My questions are:

What should I do about the prayers that I have missed due to my medical condition? Am I required to make them up, or am I excused because of ongoing disability and uncontrollable symptoms?
Regarding the fasts I missed because of illness, do I need to make them up later, or am I allowed to give fidya if my condition is chronic and unlikely to improve enough for me to fast safely?
How should I pray going forward considering my difficulty with wudu, standing, and maintaining purity due to incontinence?

I want to fulfill my obligations in a way that is correct and pleasing to Allah, while staying within what I am physically capable of.

JazakAllahu khayran for your guidance and understanding.

  1. Offer the prayers that were missed (qada). If you are unable to perform them standing, then perform them while sitting. If you cannot perform them while sitting, then perform them while lying down. There is no substitute or fidyah for prayers in one’s lifetime. As long as you are alive and conscious, prayers are not excused.
  2. Make up the missed fasts. If you are currently unable to fast but there is hope of recovery, then make up the fasts later; paying fidyah alone will not be sufficient. However, if there is absolutely no hope of recovery and fasting is not possible due to health reasons, then for each missed fast one fidyah should be given. The amount of fidyah is 574 grams, 640 milligrams of wheat, or its equivalent value.
  3. If performing wudu while standing is difficult, then perform it while sitting with support. If making wudu is possible but you cannot maintain it—such that after performing wudu you do not get enough time to perform the obligatory prayer before it breaks—then you will be considered Islamically excused (ma‘dhur). The ruling for a ma‘dhur is that when the prayer time begins, you perform wudu and offer the prayer. That wudu remains valid until the end of that prayer time, and during that time you may perform as many prayers, recitations, etc., as you wish. However, if another cause of breaking wudu occurs besides the existing excuse, then the wudu will break and must be renewed. You will continue to be considered ma‘dhur as long as the excuse occurs at least once during each prayer time.
  4. If you are unable to perform wudu on your own and there is no one available to assist you, then in that case you may perform tayammum and offer the prayer.

:
