I am writing to bring your attention to a matter of concern that pertains to both professional practice and religious sensitivity.
In North America, it has been observed that in various hospitals, medical facilities and diagnostic laboratories, urine and stool sample containers are often labeled with patients’ full names. As Muslims, many of these names include revered titles that hold deep religious and spiritual significance for us.Using such sacred names on urine and stool sample containers is deeply distressing and can be considered highly inappropriate. This practice can unintentionally lead to emotional discomfort, disrespect, or a sense of irreverence toward names that are deeply venerated in Islam.In light of this, I humbly suggest that medical institutions consider adopting a numerical identification system (such as patient ID numbers along with the date of birth or barcodes) in place of using full names on urine and stool sample containers. This practice would maintain patient confidentiality, meet professional standards, and also prevent potential disrespect toward names of religious significance.
I would be grateful if this matter could be referred to esteemed religious educators like yourself for guidance. We believe this practice is disrespectful, not just for Muslims, but for the public and that is potentially how we would want to approach this and take this to senior authorities such as medical institutions/ Ministry of Health to avoid any religious conflict, however we would like your opinion in this matter. In your opinion, would this proposal be achievable for medical facilities to transition from using patient names to a numeric or barcode-based system on urine and stool sample labels?I trust that your esteemed institution will treat this matter with the seriousness it deserves and suggest appropriate measures to rectify the current practice.Your response and consideration would be highly appreciated.Jazakum Allahu Khairan.Warm regards,

میں ایک ایسے مسئلے کی جانب آپ کی توجہ مبذول کرانا چاہتا ہوں جو پیشہ ورانہ عمل اور مذہبی حساسیت دونوں سے تعلق رکھتا ہے۔
شمالی امریکہ کے مختلف اسپتالوں، طبی مراکز اور تشخیصی لیبارٹریوں میں یہ بات مشاہدے میں آئی ہے کہ پیشاب اور فضلے (urine & stool) کے نمونوں کے کنٹینرز پر مریضوں کے مکمل نام درج کیے جاتے ہیں۔ چونکہ مسلمانوں کے بہت سے ناموں میں ایسے مبارک القابات شامل ہوتے ہیں جو ہمارے لیے نہایت مذہبی اور روحانی تقدس رکھتے ہیں، اس لیے ایسے ناموں کو پیشاب یا فضلے کے نمونوں پر لکھنا انتہائی تکلیف دہ اور نامناسب محسوس ہوتا ہے۔یہ عمل غیر ارادی طور پر جذباتی اذیت، بے ادبی یا ان ناموں کی بے حرمتی کا باعث بن سکتا ہے جو اسلام میں نہایت محترم سمجھے جاتے ہیں۔اس تناظر میں، میری عاجزانہ تجویز ہے کہ طبی ادارے مکمل ناموں کی بجائے عددی شناختی نظام (مثلاً مریض کا شناختی نمبر، تاریخِ پیدائش یا بارکوڈ وغیرہ) اپنانے پر غور کریں تاکہ مریضوں کی شناخت برقرار رہے، پیشہ ورانہ معیار پورے ہوں اور مذہبی تقدس کو بھی مجروح نہ کیا جائے۔
میں شکر گزار ہوں گا اگر اس معاملے کو آپ جیسے معزز دینی علماء کے سامنے رہنمائی کے لیے پیش کیا جائے۔ ہمارا ماننا ہے کہ یہ طرزِ عمل نہ صرف مسلمانوں بلکہ عام عوام کے لیے بھی بے احترامی کا باعث بن سکتا ہے۔ اسی پہلو سے ہم اسے اعلیٰ حکام، مثلاً طبی اداروں یا وزارتِ صحت تک پہنچانے کا ارادہ رکھتے ہیں تاکہ کسی مذہبی تصادم سے بچا جا سکے۔
ہم آپ کی رائے چاہتے ہیں کہ آیا یہ ممکن ہے کہ طبی ادارے مریضوں کے نام کی بجائے عددی یا بارکوڈ پر مبنی نظام اپنائیں؟
مجھے یقین ہے کہ آپ کا معزز ادارہ اس معاملے کو اس کی سنجیدگی کے ساتھ دیکھے گا اور مناسب رہنمائی و تجاویز فراہم کرے گا تاکہ موجودہ عمل کو بہتر کیا جا سکے۔آپ کے جواب اور غور کے لیے دل کی گہرائیوں سے مشکور ہوں۔

In Islam, sacred personalities, names, and words hold great importance, and their respect and reverence are extremely sensitive and delicate matters. Deliberate disrespect or irreverence toward them is a highly condemnable and detestable act. Wherever there is even a possibility of disrespect, it must be strictly avoided. The issue mentioned in the question relates to this very principle. It is evident that in medical centers and laboratories, the names written on blood or urine sample bottles often include sacred names — such as those of Allah Almighty, the Prophets, or other revered figures. This practice entails disrespect and must be avoided. It is advisable that, instead of writing such sacred names, codes, abbreviations in English, or identification numbers be used for patients’ samples. Of course, implementing such a system and addressing the difficulties that may arise in doing so is not easy. Therefore, it is commendable — and, in fact, necessary from a Shariah perspective — to contact the responsible authorities in medical institutions and related departments, urging them to adopt such a respectful system. We pray that Allah Almighty grants success in this effort and accepts it as one filled with respect, love, and reverence. Only Allah knows best what is correct. : اسلام میں مقدس شخصیات ہوں یا مقدس نام یا مقدس کلمات ان کی بڑی اہمیت ہے اور ان کے ادب و احترام کا مسئلہ انتہائی حساس اور نازک بھی ہے، اور عمدا ان کی بے ادبی اور بے احترامی انتہائی مذموم اور قبیح ترین عمل ہے ،اور جہاں بے ادبی اور بے احترامی کا شائبہ ہو اس سے بچنے کا حکم ہے، سوال میں مذکورہ مسئلہ بھی اسی سے تعلق رکھتا ہے، ظاہر ہے کہ طبی مراکز اور لیبارٹریز میں خون اور پیشا ب وغیرہ کی بوتل پر مریض کے جو نام لکھے جاتے ہیں ان میں اللہ سبحانہ تعالیٰ انبیاء کرام اور دیگر مقدس نام ہوتے ہیں،اور اس میں بے ادبی اور بے احترامی ہے، اس سے بچنا ضروری ہے ،اور ان مقدس ناموں کی جگہ کوڈز یا انگریزی میں ان کا مخفف یا شناختی کارڈ نمبرز کے اندراج اور اس طرح کا کوئی انتظام کیا جائے تو بہتر ہے،اور ظاہر ہے کہ اس نظام کو نافذ کرنا اور اس میں پیش آنے والی دشواریوں کا حل آسان نہیں ہے،اس کے لیےان طبی مراکز اور متعلقہ شعبوں کے ذمہ داروں سے رابطہ اور اس طرح کے نظام کو نافذ کرنے کی کوشش اور اپیل کی جائےتو اس کو ہم قابل تعریف سمجھتے ہیں، بلکہ شرعی ضرورت کے پیش نظر اس کو ضروری بھی سمجھتے ہیں اور دعا گو ہیں کہ حق تعالیٰ اس میں کامیابی عطا فرمائے اور ادب و احترام ، محبت اور عظمت کے جذبے سے بھرپور اس کوشش قبول فرمائے۔
