Keeping My Mother With Me

Question

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullah
My wife is a very good woman; she is very supportive, respectful, kind and a good daughter in law. My mother lives with my brother in Pakistan. I informed my wife that I wanted to bring my mother to live with us in the USA, but my wife does not agree to this arrangement. She says that she will not have her privacy and does not feel comfortable living with my mother since we have a very small house and one of our children is disabled. I have always financially supported my mother in Pakistan and continue to take care of all of my mother's needs financially and also manage a good relationship with her. I wanted to bring her here to USA because she wants to see the USA and live with me, but my wife is not allowing this. Is this considered as a sin that my wife is not allowing me to bring my mother to live with us? My wife encourages me to financially take care of my mother, visit her and have a good relationship with her. The only thing my wife does not agree with is living with my mother. Does a wife has the right to say that she does not want to live with my mother?

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullah
Since it is just a matter of few days, you should counsel with and guide your wife, if she understands and agrees, that will be great. If she does not agree then it will be considered as insensitivity and depriving oneself from the honor of serving her elders. A wife does not have the right to stop you from keeping your mother with you, however if she does not want to live with her then it is incumbent upon you to provide a separate living arrangement for your wife or your mother upon her (your wife's) demand. This living arrangement should be in such a manner that it does not interfere with both their liberties.
