Hi. Assalamu akaykum. my husband and I are struggling. We’ve been together for 4 years and are Islamically married, not legally yet. We live separately because we live on 5 min away from one another. My husband recently just came to me distraught and I finally got it out of him. He’s been feeling different in our relationship. I know we are new to this and it may be the shaytan testing our relationship. I asked him all the important questions like
“can you imagine us with a house and a family”
“Are you attracted to me”
And all of those things. He feels awful because he said he loves me so much and says I’m perfect and there’s nothing wrong with me and he’s confused why he’s having doubts.
Do you think it’s the shaytan? He wants to fix this issue and continue to choose me. He’s more or less anxious that he’s having these doubts like “what if we aren’t meant to be?” “What if we’re unfit for one another”. He also mentioned it’s been feeling like a friendship almost. Because we have grown so comfortable with each other. May I add, we’ve known each other for 10+ years. And like I said, the intimate part of us is still lively and we have great chemistry).
Do you think he doesn’t love me anymore? Or do you think he’s struggling like everyone in a long term relationship and we just need to find that spark back?
How can we do this?
And what can we pray to help each other?
I know Ramadan is coming up inshAllah ya rabb.
I know Ramadan comes when our hearts need it most.
I need genuine advice. Please help.
Jazakallah khair.
The relationship between husband and wife is among the greatest blessings granted by Allah Almighty. The strength and stability of this bond depend on mutual love, trust, good conduct, and fulfilling each other’s rights. When both spouses take care of each other’s emotions, needs, and rights, love and affection increase between them, and the home becomes a place of peace and comfort.
The Prophet ﷺ emphasized the importance of marriage and said that there is no better means of increasing love between two loving people than marriage itself. In reality, after marriage, two strangers develop such closeness, affection, and attachment that is rarely found in other relationships.
The blessed life of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is the best example in matters of marital relations. Expressing love between spouses and maintaining good conduct is an important part of Islamic teachings. Therefore, you and your husband should connect yourselves with the Seerah of the Prophet ﷺ. For mutual harmony and love, the foundation is piety and fear of Allah. Regular prayer and observance of Islamic teachings should be maintained.
As for thoughts such as whether the relationship is suitable or whether you are made for each other, these are satanic whisperings (waswasa). Do not pay attention to them. Such thoughts often arise when living separately; therefore, try to live together as soon as possible. Marriage is meant for living together, not for living apart. Hence, live together with mutual understanding, fulfilling each other’s rights and considering each other’s feelings.
You should also serve your husband sincerely, try your best to keep him happy, and after every obligatory prayer, recite the following verse of the Qur’an 11 times and make heartfelt supplication:﴿وَأَلَّفَ بَيْنَ قُلُوبِهِمْ لَوْ أَنفَقْتَ مَا فِي الأَرْضِ جَمِيعاً مَّا أَلَّفَتْ بَيْنَ قُلُوبِهِمْ وَلَكِنَّ اللَّهَ أَلَّفَ بَيْنَهُمْ إِنَّهُ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ﴾
