It’s not Fard (mandatory) for the husband to take his wife for Hajj. If the wife has enough money for her and her mahram’s Hajj expenses and other necessary arrangements and then the husband prevents her from going to Hajj, the husband will carry the sin.
To take one’s wife for Hajj is a great fortune and joy. One should thank Allaah Ta’ala for it and not quarrel about it, belittle each other, nor keep mentioning to her that he did a favor upon her. Both should ask forgiveness from each other and ask Allaah Ta’ala to accept their Hajj. They should avoid such frivolous argument.
If the husband has enough money for only his Hajj, then he can do Hajj alone. If he does not take his wife for Hajj, it is wrong to say that his Hajj will not be accepted.
Three things are included in the maintenance allowance of the wife, i.e., food, clothing, and shelter. The ruling in regards to whose financial capacity should be the standard in these expenses is that the financial status of both the husband and the wife is to be considered.
If both are rich, the food, clothing, and shelter of the rich are to be provided.
If both are poor, then that of the poor.
But if one is rich and the other is poor then the average maintenance allowance will be necessary in consideration of the status of both of them.
So if the man is rich and the woman is poor, it will not be necessary for the man to provide food of his standard. Rather he would provide average food to his wife, neither it would be of the standard of the rich nor of the poor. However, it would be better that whatever he is eating, the kind of clothes he is wearing, the same arrangement should be made for his wife.
Similarly if the man is poor and the wife is rich then it would be necessary for the man to provide average standard food, clothing, and shelter which though would be more than the capacity of the husband but until he attains that capacity the expense over and above his capacity would accumulate as a loan upon him.
The wife is to stay wherever the husband has made housing arrangements for her.
