Peace, mercy, and blessings of God be upon you. Please excuse me for asking these questions, but I need answers if it's not too much trouble or inconvenience.
The issue is that there is someone who claims to be a legitimate religious healer (ruqyah practitioner), but he says he can control jinn and unleash them to harm anyone he deems evil, causing them severe damage, supposedly to protect people. He also claims to be able to gather information about anyone he wants to treat, even if they are in another country, and to communicate with the patient without any personal meeting or using conventional means of communication, but rather through spiritual telepathy. He even claims to make the patient hear his voice inside their head, telling them what to do and what not to do, thus preventing them from committing sins. He claims he can treat them even if they are in another country or a distant place, or help them without their knowledge. He says this is done by requesting dates, addresses, and names of people. Is this a legitimate religious healer? Are these the characteristics of a legitimate healer, or are they those of a sorcerer?
May God protect you, bless you, and increase you in goodness through His grace and mercy.
Among the many forms of treatment, ruqyah (spiritual healing), taʿwīdh (amulets containing Qur'anic verses or supplications), and prescribed spiritual practices (ʿamaliyyāt) are recognized as permissible methods of treatment, subject to certain conditions. These include:
- The words and meanings of the taʿwīdh must be clear and understandable.
- It must not contain any words of shirk (associating partners with Allah) or anything contrary to Islamic belief.
- One must not believe that the taʿwīdh or practice has independent power to benefit; rather, it is only a means, while Allah alone is the true Healer.
- The person performing the spiritual treatment should be knowledgeable and trustworthy, and should not deceive people.
- The treatment must not involve any prohibited acts, such as unlawful mixing with non-mahram women, immodesty, or any other practice contrary to the Shariah.
It is permissible to seek treatment from someone who performs spiritual healing through lawful and established supplications, Qur'anic verses, or other permissible means, provided that the taʿwīdh or supplication is regarded only as a means of cure and not as having independent efficacy. It is authentically established that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited supplications and blew over the sick (ruqyah), and it is also reported from some of the Companions (رضي الله عنهم) that they would write supplications and hang them around the necks of young children.
As for knowledge of the unseen (ghayb), it belongs exclusively to Allah. No human being or jinn possesses independent knowledge of the unseen. Therefore, if anyone claims to have such knowledge, that claim has no validity. Some people attempt to obtain information through jinn, spirits, or devils and seek their assistance, but whatever information they provide is neither certain nor reliable, and many of their claims prove to be false. Accordingly, making such claims is not permissible in Islamic law.
Similarly, magicians and sorcerers employ such methods. Therefore, one should avoid seeking treatment from such individuals and instead consult a competent and trustworthy practitioner who confines himself to lawful Islamic spiritual remedies.
