(1) Sharh al-Sadr (expansion of the chest) refers to a spiritual state of the heart and a condition of contentment, in which a person gains peace and certainty regarding doing or not doing something, leaving no room for doubts or hesitation. When Sharh al-Sadr and this inner state are attained for something, then regarding the opposite of it one feels no difficulty, fear, or apprehension. (2) It is not necessary that whatever one feels Sharh al-Sadr for is correct, because it is possible for someone to feel conviction and inner contentment about something that is in fact wrong. When Sharh al-Sadr occurs for a true or righteous matter, it is correct; but if it occurs for a wrong or sinful matter, then it is incorrect. In the Qur’an, Allah mentions Sharh al-Sadr in relation to faith: “So is he whose chest Allah has opened to Islam, so he is upon a light from his Lord...” (Al-Zumar: 22) Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah () recited this verse and said: “Indeed, when the light enters the heart, the chest expands (opens).” The Companions asked: “O Messenger of Allah, is there any sign of this (Sharh al-Sadr)?” He replied: “Yes, its signs are: (1) (Dar al-Ghuroor) detachment and lack of desire for the worldly life; (2) (Dar al-Khulood) longing for the eternal abode, Paradise; and (3) preparing for death before it comes.” On the other hand, Allah mentions Sharh al-Sadr in relation to disbelief: “But those who open their breasts to disbelief, upon them is the wrath of Allah, and for them is a tremendous punishment.” (Al-Nahl: 106) As for someone expressing Sharh al-Sadr regarding a specific matter and then passing judgment that it is definitely correct—this is very difficult. For example, in matters such as showing sympathy, generosity, or having conviction that something is assistance from Allah, these have different forms and contexts. It is better if you clarify the background and circumstances of the question you are asking. This is because it is not necessary that if one person feels Sharh al-Sadr about something, others will also feel it. Some may feel contentment in a matter, while others may not—as was the case at the time of the compilation of the Qur’an and other incidents among the Companions (RA). Therefore, if someone feels contentment and certainty about something, it is not necessarily true or beneficial in reality. Hence, if such a situation arises, it is better to resolve it through mutual consultation. It is also better to avoid labeling someone’s Sharh al-Sadr as true or false and to refrain from delving into such disputes.
