Seeking Guidance on Marriage & Parents’ Concerns

As-salāmu ʿalaykum wa raḥmatullāhi wa barakātuh Mufti Sahab,

I pray this message reaches you in the best of health and imān, and that Allah fills your day with barakah.

My name is Tasnima. Alhamdulillāh, I am currently in my second year of the ʿĀlimah program. I am writing to you because I am in desperate need of guidance regarding a personal issue with my parents.

I love and respect my parents deeply, and I know Islam emphasizes their rights over me. However, I feel that in this matter, my voice and feelings are not being respected. My parents want me to accept a proposal that they believe is best for me, but I do not feel this is the type of marriage that will bring me closer to Allah.

What I truly want in a spouse is someone who has studied dīn, values Islam over culture, and will be a partner with me in building a life focused on pleasing Allah. Alhamdulillāh, I have come across a potential spouse who is an ʿĀlim and from what I have seen of his family, he embodies the values I am looking for. However, my parents are rejecting him solely because he is from a different race, and they insist that they alone have the right to choose my spouse.

I do not want to disobey or hurt my parents, and I want their barakah in my marriage. At the same time, I know Islam does not permit rejecting a person only because of race, and I fear being forced into a marriage where culture is prioritized over dīn. I want to do things the right way, with respect and sincerity, but I feel stuck.

That is why I am reaching out to you. I am asking if you could please advise me on how to handle this situation, and if possible, help me by speaking to my parents so that they can understand this issue from an Islamic perspective. I have been making duʿā for Allah’s help, and I believe that finding your contact is a means Allah has placed in my path.

Jazākallāhu khayran for taking the time to read this. May Allah reward you and place barakah in your efforts.Sincerely,Tasnima K

Parents cannot force their adult children into a marriage, nor can they compel their daughter to accept a proposal. Once a girl become adult, her marriage depends upon her own consent. However, the daughter should also understand that parents’ decisions are usually based on wisdom, goodwill, and compassion. Their choices stem from a lifetime of experience and observation. Generally, their decisions tend to bring stability and lasting success. This has been the norm among respectable families. On the other hand, the personal choices of young men and women, made without parental consent, are often driven by emotion and immaturity. Once emotions cool down, such relationships often lack stability and endurance. Compatibility in temperament, personality, character, and religiosity plays a major role in a successful married life. Therefore, one should be content with the parents’ decisions, and involving them in such important matters is indeed a great blessing. However, if they choose a proposal for you that gives preference to worldly matters over religion, then you have the right to request that they at least select a pious and religious match within your own community or family circle. At the same time, parents should also ensure that when their daughter reaches maturity and a suitable, religious proposal is available, they should arrange her marriage without unnecessary delay. It is also better that they consider the opinion and preference of their children in such matters. Sayyiduna ʿAlī (RA) narrated that the Prophet said:“O ʿAlī, do not delay three things: the prayer when its time arrives, the funeral when it is present, and the marriage of a single woman when a suitable and compatible match is found.”(Musnad Ahmad, Hadith 828) Therefore, if there is confidence and satisfaction regarding a certain proposal, it should be presented to the parents, istikhara should be performed, and action should be taken after consultation with the elders of the family. Insha’Allah, there will be goodness and blessing in this. Only Allah knows best what is correct. Darul Ifta, Shariah Board of America
